Sky Movies Disney deal locks in Star Wars and Marvel movies

Like Lando Calrissian and Darth Vader shaking hands in the chambers of Cloud City, Sky and Disney have done a deal which will see Disney classics like Bambi and Pinocchio coming to UK screens on a new Sky Movies Disney channel.

Crucially, the deal gives Sky the rights to other titles distributed by Disney, which includes new movies from Lucasfilm.

Meaning Star Wars Episodes 7, 8 and 9 (or VII, VIII and IX, if you must) will be arriving on Sky Movies first once they’ve finished their cinematic runs.

Sky Movies and Now TV subscribers will be able to pick up the new Star Wars movies as well as upcoming Marvel Studios films including Iron Man 3. Disney/Pixar hits like Brave and Finding Nemo will also be available, as will recent hit Wreck-It Ralph (pictured) later in the year. Live action movies from the Pirates of the Caribbean and National Treasure series will also be available from launch.

Parents across the UK will breathe a collective sigh of relief as it’s announced that Sky will be launching Sky Movies Disney in time for the Easter Holidays – March 28, 2013 – so you can keep your little ones enraptured with Cinderella or scare them witless with Pinocchio – the Pleasure Island transformation scene remains one of the most chilling moments in the Disney canon.

Sky will also be launching a Disney section in it’s On Demand library later in the year, offering hundreds of hours of catch-up content, plus a new HD version of Disney Junior which is coming in April.

Thanks to the launch of Sky Go Extra, you’ll also be able to download titles for later viewing on your phone or tablet or stream them on the move with Sky Go.

Sky Movies is available on Sky, Virgin Media, TalkTalk TV and Now TV is available on iOS devices, selected Android phones and tablets, Xbox 360, Roku devices and YouView.
