Superfast Cymru brings next-gen broadband to 275,000 Welsh properties

The Welsh Government has been busy installing superfast broadband in 275,000 homes across the country, with three new towns connected in the last week.

Lampeter, Botwnnog and Llanferres were able to connect to the next-generation fibre broadband from Monday, while Wrexham, Rhymney, Amman Valley, Cymmer, Glantawe and Glynneath have all been connected in the last two weeks.

Communities in these areas are now able to connect to Superfast Cymru’s FTTC 80Mbps (Fibre to the Cabinet)-based services from ISPs covering the area using BT’s Openreach network.

275,000 homes and businesses around Wales have now been connected

Superfast Cymru programme director, Ed Hunt said: “We know how important it is that as many people as possible can take advantage of fibre broadband. Through BT’s own commercial roll-out and now with Superfast Cymru we are taking world class speeds the length and breadth of Wales, including rural and urban areas.

“Great progress is being made but the sheer scale of the programme means we still have a long way to go. We look forward to changing the lives of households across Wales and the growth opportunities for Welsh businesses, all brought about by our superfast deployment.“

Just a month ago, superfast broadband was available in 230,000 properties and this boost to 275,000 properties around the country shows their dedication to rolling out a top-notch service to 96 per cent of Wales by Spring 2016.

The remaining four per cent of residents and businesses will be able to make the most of the initiative’s ‘basic’ service, which offers speeds of up to 2Mbps.

Whether you can get a full speed 80Mbps depends on how far away you are from one of Superfast Cymru’s cabinets, similar to more traditional ADSL services.

By the time Superfast Cymru is completed in 18 months time, every cabinet in the whole of Wales will have been upgraded, with capabilities to provide FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), delivering top download speeds of 330Mbps without losing any speed if you’re further away from the cabinet.
