Three: Free 4G for everyone, provided you can get it

Three has announced that every customer capable of getting 4G on its network is now getting it.

The network, arriving fashionably late to the party, didn’t start rolling out 4G to its mobile customers until December 2013. EE began rolling out 4G in October 2012 while Vodafone and O2 launched their own 4G services in August 2013.

Despite being the last network to begin its next gen rollout, Three is now saying that all of its customers are now on 4G tariffs.

This doesn’t automatically mean that every Three customer with a 4G SIM and a 4G handset can get it either. Owners of some versions of phones like the Sony Xperia SP may need to wait for an update before they’re able to use 4G. On an unlocked non-network specific edition of the Xperia SP, we weren’t able to select 4G/WCDMA/GSM as our preferred setting, something which you’ll need to do according to Three’s own support page.

Unlike other networks, Three hasn’t introduced separate tariffs or put prices up for 4G. It’s essentially offering 4G as a free upgrade that’s rolling out across the country.

If Three hasn’t switched on 4G in your town, but your phone is capable of getting it, you’ll be able to pick it up should you trave to an area where 4G is abundant.

Three 4G is available in 36 UK cities and towns including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Reading and Liverpool. By the end of 2014, Three aims to have brought 4G to over 50 cities and 200 towns.

Over half a million (565,000) new customers joined the Three network in 2013, which might have had something to do with the company’s recent decision to cut the offer of unlimited WiFi tethering on it’s One Plan unlimited data contracts.

Three, like all of the UK’s main networks, is committed to providing 4G coverage to 98 per cent of the UK’s population by the end of 2015.
