Woody Allen to write and direct Untitled Project for Amazon

The latest big name Amazon’s nabbed is Woody Allen – the Hollywood icon has signed to to write and direct a new series for Prime Instant Video.

The currently-named Untitled Woody Allen Project is a half hour TV series that will premiere exclusively on Amazon’s subscription streaming service in the US, UK and Germany.

No other names have been attached to the project yet and Amazon hasn’t been any clearer about when we might get to see it, other than sometime in 2016.

Roy Price, vice president of Amazon Studios gushed: “Woody Allen is a visionary creator who has made some of the greatest films of all-time, and it’s an honor to be working with him on his first television series. From Annie Hall to Blue Jasmine, Woody has been at the creative forefront of American cinema and we couldn’t be more excited to premiere his first TV series exclusively on Prime Instant Video next year.”

In typical disarming Allen fashion, the star said: “I don’t know how I got into this. I have no ideas and I’m not sure where to begin. My guess is that Roy Price will regret this.”

Amazon is keen to build up a portfolio of original content to rival that offered by Netflix, which recently announced the launch date for the hotly-anticipated third season of House of Cards

Amazon Studios most recent exclusive show is Mozart in the Jungle from Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman, Paul Weitz, John Strauss and Alex Timbers.

Prime Instant Video (£5.99/month) is available to stream online (Windows and Mac OS), on iOS, Android and Amazon Fire devices. Folks with regular Android-based phones and tablets now need to follow this workaround in order to access Amazon content. Prime Instant Video is also available on selected smart TVs from LG, Panasonic, Samsung and Sony as well as Xbox 360 and One, PlayStation 3 and 4, Wii and Wii U.
