Virgin Media has completed what’s being called a city-wide rollout of fibre broadband across Southampton, connecting over 80,000 homes and businesses to its 100Mbps network.
As well as locations in the city centre, homes and businesses in Eastleigh and Chandler’s Ford have also been passed by Virgin Media fibre.
Local paper the Southern Daily Echo has more details on the project which began in October last year, encompassing the Shirley, Bitterne and Harefield areas, with Eastleigh being the final region to get connected.
We’re waiting to hear back from Virgin Media about when Southampton residents can expect even faster top speeds of 120Mbps off the back of the speed doubling programme and just how ‘city-wide’ it is.
Southampton’s not a small place, so there’s a chance that a few homes and business premises that might not have been reachable.
However many places have been touched by Virgin Media fibre, 80,000 new lines will no doubt help the UK’s average broadband speeds inch a little higher up the European superfast league tables.
