Virgin Media stays in third with 4.5 million broadband customers

Virgin Media latest figures show that the company remains the UK’s third biggest ISP by customer size with 4.5 million broadband customers.

While this puts it behind second placers Sky (5.1 million) punters and pack leaders BT (7.1 million), Virgin Media is still comfortably above TalkTalk which has just over 4 million subscribers

Virgin Media added 39,000 cable broadband customers in the last three months, taking the total number of customers who buy fibre optic broadband to 4,375,700.

This takes the total number of households buying fixed-line internet from Virgin Media is some form or other to 4,510,500.

Virgin’s cable network currently covers 12,520,000 UK premises, representing a growth of 48,300 homes from last year. Virgin Media’s cable network covers roughly 55 per cent of the UK.

While Virgin’s figures show a net loss in fixed line telephone customers, it’s also been revealed that the majority of subscribers (65.7 per cent) are triple-play customers; people who choose to take fixed-line calls, TV and broadband from the big red cable company.

Virgin Media is technically a quad-play provider as it offers a mobile service too – Virgin Mobile which uses EE’s signal. The proportion of cable customers taking all three fixed-line products as well as mobile increased to 16.3 per cent penetration.
