WiFi on the trains and beaches: Broadband Rollout Roundup 30/03/13

Broadband Rollout Roundup for this week takes on a bit of a wireless flavour – EE has rolled out 4G mobile broadband to parts of Cumbria, there’s free WiFi on more of London’s train stations and the Cloud has set up free WiFi on Great Yarmouth’s beaches. Shame the weather right now is too rubbish for anyone to enjoy it – spare a thought for those on the Isle of Arran.

As well as this, we’ve heard more about BT’s superfast broadband plans, Hyperoptic connecting over 20,000 customers to its Gigabit fibre network and those NIMBYs in Kensington and Chelsea finally coming to their senses…

Here’s Broadband Rollout Roundup for 30/03/13.

EE extends 4G with launch in rural Cumbria

Roughly 2,000 residents in Cumbria’s Northern Fells will be able to hook up with 4G broadband this summer. Download speeds of up to 20Mbps will be made available to 84 per cent of residents in the area for £15.99/month. The launch of the service follows extensive trials made in the area by EE, prior to the official launch of its 4G services late last year.

Londoners can’t get enough of their free WiFi – if we’re not sitting in Costa using free O2 WiFi we’re on the underground checking Twitter on Virgin Media’s network. Thanks to a deal done with Microsoft, access to The Cloud’s WiFi network at London overground stations will be free from now until April 24.

Great Yarmouth’s pier has its head in the Cloud – free WiFi for holidaymakers

As well as London train stations, the Cloud has also set up a free WiFi network along the beaches and piers of Great Yarmouth. Locals and visitors will be able to make use of the free wireless broadband which was set up in tandem with a CCTV network.

Hyperoptic gigabit fibre broadband network reaches 20,000 customers

Hyperoptic is a London-based ISP that specialises in proividing gigabit fibre broadband to new build homes and apartment blocks. Last year the company served just over 10,000 customers and stated a desire to double this by the end of 2012. While they didn’t quite hit the 20K mark before the end of the year they have now – and this is just the beginning. The fibre broadband provider has ambitious plans to have half a million punters signed up within five years, is exploring a digital TV service and wants to launch services in another UK city this year.
