Amazon Kindle Fire tablet may sell 5 million units by end of year

We’ve already reported on the Amazon Kindle Fire’s amazing sales statistics (if you missed it: 50,000 pre-order units per day), and now we’re hearing whispers of another big number that’s bound to have Jeff Bezos grinning ear-to-ear. According to Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar, Amazon is on track to shift five million Kindle Fire tablets by the end of the year.

We know there comes a point where numbers like that just become statistics, so for comparison, the iPad 2 sold just 4.69 million units in its first quarter (April-June 2011). That puts the Amazon Kindle Fire ahead of the rest of the tablet pack in sales terms (assuming that prediction’s accurate), even if Amazon still have quite a way to go before matching Apple’s total iPad sales, which currently total around 30 million units.

The Kindle Fire’s main USP is its super-low $200 pricetag, putting it between $200 and $600 lower than competing Android tablets. As with Apple’s iPads, Amazon are in the enviable position of being able to undersell the tablet’s hardware (Amazon reportedly makes a loss of $10 on ever Kindle Fire just in hardware costs alone) and make up the difference in content sales. With the launch of its own app store, Kindle Fire users will be able to get all their content from Amazon, including ebooks, video, music and apps.
