Apple planning design overhaul of new iPhone 5

Apple is apparently “preparing to overhaul the look of its iPhone.” The forthcoming iPhone 5 will feature a larger screen, measuring in at around 4-inches across – up from the current 3.5-inch screen.

Bloomberg reports that orders have been placed from suppliers for screens bigger than 3.5-inches. Apple has is said to have been working on the iPhone since before the launch of the iPhone 4S and although on medical leave,  Steve Jobs had a “key role” in the iPhone 5’s development and design.

We reported yesterday that LG Display, Sharp Corp. and Japan Display are rumoured to be working on the new iPhone 5 screens and we will keep you updated with news as it comes in.

Any design changes will be the first since the move from iPhone 3G and 3GS to the iPhone 4, not to mention the first time ever if the screen size changes from the original 3.5-inches we first saw on the first iPhone in 2007.

As handset rivals like Samsung and HTC continue to launch smartphones with larger screens and customers become more accustom to them, a larger screen is something that Apple must have considered. We’ll bring you more news about the iPhone 5 when we get it.
