Apple reportedly considering 4.7-inch, 5.7-inch iPhone

Apple has retained a smaller screen size on the iphone despite the industry shift towards larger displays in general, but that may be set to change if a report from Reuters is to believed. The publication says that Cupertino is mulling the possibility of larger screen iOS devices, ranging anywhere from 4.7-inches to 5.7-inches.

Sources speaking to Reuters say that the company has approached panel suppliers about larger screen sizes. One device could be 4.7-inches in size, while the other may be as large as 5.7-inches. Of course, Apple is mostly likely only considering testing such screens for now, so there’s no guarantee that the company will ever bring a significantly larger iPhone to market.

The move seems to be in response to Samsung, who has famously experimented with just about every screen size there is. The original Galaxy S started out at a paltry 4-inches by today’s standards, with flagships like the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 2 reaching sizes of 5-inches and 5.5-inches respectively. And those devices certainly seem to sell well, especially in Asia. Despite Apple’s reservations about large screen devices, it’s hard to deny that the market definitely likes them.

In addition, Reuters say that Apple is still on track to produce a cheaper iPhone that will be made available in several different colours. It’s a rumour that we’ve heard several times before, but Reuters now says that the cheaper device may have been pushed back to next year.
