In a nutshell: What to expect from Apple’s iPhone 6 launch

Apple is launching the iPhone 6 – perhaps in two different models – and maybe more on Tuesday 9th September. But will we see the iWatch, and any other surprises? Here’s our to-the-point Apple iPhone 6 launch rumour round-up.

At 6pm on Tuesday 9th September, Apple will take to the stage in Cupertino to launch the iPhone 6. If that isn’t enough shiiny tech for you, we might see some other goodies too, such as Apple’s first wearable device. Here’s our brief to-the-point round-up of everything you need to know ahead of Apple’s launch.

Apple iPhone 6 launch rumour round-up ahead of Tuesday September 9th

Will Apple launch two iPhone 6 models on Tuesday?

Yes, all signs point to two variants of the iPhone 6, a standard 4.7-inch model (already a significant size boost over the iPhone 5s and earlier models) plus a ‘phablet-sized’ 5.5-inch version (matching LG’s G3 phone). There’s rumours that the 5.5-inch model might be delayed or in short supply due to screen manufacturing issues, but we expect to see both launched on Tuesday.

What will be the stand-out iPhone 6 specs and features?

Apple has changed up the design of the iPhone hardware significantly, boosting the screen size and rounding off those flat edges, as well as shaving a few mm off the girth.

The screen is now made of tougher material too, so metal can’t scratch it easily – although the iPhone 6 won’t rock a sapphire screen as previously rumoured. Expect a sharper resolution as well, around 416 pixels-per-inch.

Specs-wise, the major new addition is NFC for contactless payments, while the iPhone’s camera has been boosted to a 13-megapixel snapper with Time Lapse and lots of other great new camera features.

Other than that, expect the Touch ID fingerprint scanner again and a nice bit of iOS 8 – which incidentally should roll out to existing iPhones this week.

When will the iPhone 6 hit the UK, and how much?

Usually Apple’s launch devices hit UK stores a week and a half after launch, so expect to see the iPhone 6 on sale around September 20th. That means jobless tech geeks and rich students will start queueing pretty much now.

As for cost, expect the usual steep (sorry, ‘premium’) pricing, with eye-watering effects akin to plucking testicle hairs. £500 for the 32GB 4.7-inch model, rising to just shy of a grand for the best 5.5-incher.

Any other Apple goodies like the iWatch launching?

It’s very possible that Apple’s new iWatch will launch at the same time as the iPhone 6, but we personally reckon Apple will want to concentrate on its new smartphone(s) instead, revealing the iWatch at a later date with the new iPad. Of course, the iWatch should tie in nicely with iOS 8’s new connected home features, so we may see the watch sooner than expected.

We’ll be covering Apple’s launch live on Tuesday 9th September (6pm UK time, although the good stuff won’t roll around until 6.20 to 6.30-ish as Tim Cook bangs on about stats and all that crap).
