Best smartwatches and wearables for Android and iPhone

Looking for the best smartwatch that’s compatible with your Android phone or iPhone? Or perhaps the best fitness tracker to monitor your health and exercise regime? Here’s our recommended selection of the best Android/iOS wearables in 2016.

Premium smartwatches

Samsung Gear S2 (Android)

Samsung’s latest smartwatch is a gorgeous and feature-packed wearable that’s compatible with a host of Android handsets. The slick Tizen interface holds a bevy of features, while the sharp, punchy screen really shines. And if rumours are right, Samsung might be adding iOS support soon.

Motorola Moto 360 (iOS and Android)

Updated for 2015, the Moto 360 is now slimmer and better-looking than before, with a great choice of bands and sizes including straps suitable for more feminine wrists. You get a built-in heart rate sensor and all of the usual Android Wear features.

Apple Watch (iOS)

Apple’s first attempt at a smartwatch is far from perfect, with many features we’d like to see sadly missing in action – although the latest version of WatchOS helps to fix that somewhat. But let’s face it, you’re really throwing a large chunk of money at Apple for that gorgeous and thankfully durable design.

Affordable smartwatches

Asus Zenwatch 2 (iOS and Android)

The Zenwatch 2 is gorgeous and boasts a large 1.63-inch screen, making it easy to read even in harsh glare, as well as quick charge support. Best of all, the price (€149) is very affordable considering there’s no sacrifice in specs.

Pebble Time (iOS and Android)

Pebble Time is the smartwatch to go for if you can’t stand charging an extra device every night. Five to six days of battery life means it’s rarely off your wrist, while the colourful interface is nice and simple – although notifications could be handled better.

Fitness trackers

Withings Activite

This Withings offering is pricey but also very classy, with a ‘proper’ watch design. If the Swiss Made mark, aesthetics and ease of use aren’t enough to convince you, the eight month battery life is a huge bonus over pretty much every other tracker on the market. The Activite also has built-in swim tracking, if you don’t mind rocking it in the pool.

Jawbone UP3 (iOS, Android)

A smart and useful revision of one of the most popular activity trackers on the market, complete with heart rate monitoring and lots of detailed features to seriously track your health and general well-being.
