Carphone Warehouse hack: Will I be affected and what should I do?

Carphone Warehouse’s customer data may have been seriously breached, with the personal details of up to 2.4 million users potentially now in the hands of criminals. Here’s what to do if you’re worried that your personal details have been stolen.

First of all, the ‘vast majority’ of customers should be unaffected by the hack, according to Carphone Warehouse. However, if you have used the websites, or, there is a chance that your details have been compromised.

Up to 90,000 customers may have had their encrypted payment details (including credit card information) stolen. Also, 480,000 Talk Talk Mobile customers are said to be affected (as Talk Talk used to be owned by Carphone Warehouse) as well as users of the iD network.

Sebastian James, the Chief Executive of Dixons Carphone, has stated that customers that may have been affected are being contacted. Of course, with such a big potential hack, this may take a while. It seems that Carphone Warehouse has been sending out letters to potential victims, since the hack was first discovered on August 5th.

Of course, you shouldn’t sit around waiting for the postman if you’re worried that you may be affected by the hack. Straight away you should change your Carphone Warehouse account password, to prevent anyone from gaining access. Be sure to keep a close eye on your bank account also, and report any suspicious activity to your bank immediately.

And if you do get a call from someone asking for your bank details or any other personal information, claiming that they’re from Carphone Warehouse or any other organisation, NEVER give out this info. It should never be asked for, regardless of whether you’re affected or not.

And if you want further advice, you can call the Action Fraud hotline on 0300 123 2040.
