Facebook Deals launches in the UK, get free stuff with your mobile

Facebook has just launched Facebook Deals here in the UK. This Foursquare-style service allows you to check in to locations and get discounts and free stuff with your phone.

For today only, the first 30,000 people to check in at participating Starbucks can claim a free filter coffee. Yo Sushi is also giving away 2000 meals to the first 1,000 people who check in to their 47 participating restaurants. Whoever said free lunch didn’t exist was lying.

To check for deals, point your phone’s browser to www.facebook.com, or if you’ve got a fancy-pants smartphone, load up your Facebook app. Open up ‘Places’ and click ‘Check In’. A list of nearby venues will displayed, with those running promotions displaying a yellow ticket next to their names. Tap on each deal yellow ticket to see what the deal is, and present your phone when you go to pay.

Deals include getting free stuff, others will simply give you a discount, or give you a free slice of cake when you order 2 coffees or something. Regular customers will also be able to benefit from Loyalty Deals, and Charity Deals will allow stores and businesses to donate when you check in.

Today, Argos stores will donate £1 to Teenage Cancer Trust for the first 10,000 customers who check in this week.

With Facebook Deals, O2 will be offering a free PS3 or Xbox 360 to customers to upgrade or buy a new contract on the 5th of February, and is currently offering 10 per cent off of accessories til then.

Mazda is also offering a huge 20 per cent discounts off Mazda MX-5’s at selected showrooms and is giving away 5 MX-5’s over the summer.

Of course, when you check in to claim a discount, details of it are going to be published to your Wall. So you can expect to see a lot of ‘Dave Checked In and got 317 Free Lattes’ hitting your News Feed pretty soon.
