Get ready for Katy Perry: the game

As if a successful pop and film career weren’t enough, it seems that pop princess Katy Perry has got her sights set on the mobile world too, with her own mobile game landing in 2015. But what it actually involves is anyone’s guess…

Developer Glu Mobile has announced a partnership with Miss Perry and they’re hard at work on a game featuring her likeness and personality, which will “introduce players to a digital playground of global success and talent”, whatever that means. Hashtag humblebrag for that one.

According to Glu Mobile, the game is already expected to be a huge success, thanks in no small part to Katy’s considerable online presence.

Glu CEO Niccolo de Masi said: “Katy is arguably the most recognized musician in America following her Super Bowl XLIX Halftime performance this past Sunday. She is a cultural icon and we expect to translate key elements of her success into an innovative, highly entertaining mobile experience. We anticipate that Katy’s significant global audience, including more than 170 million fans on social media, will make her a strong gaming partner for Glu.”

If the name Glu is familiar to you, it’s probably because the company also launched Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, a game best consigned to the annals of history (and misery) despite its mystifying success. The game grossed over $43 million in between June and September of last year, which makes us want to clamber into a bath with ten electric toasters.

Quite what Katy Perry’s game will entail is anyone’s guess, but two things you can pretty much expect are a boatload of in-app purchases and for the title to be wildly successful.

We’re expecting it to be startlingly similar to Kim Kardashian’s game in that you’ll be able to dress Katy Perry up in virtual outfits (which you probably pay real life cash for), as well as doing her hair and make-up. Whether you’ll be able to sing along with her songs as part of the game remains to be seen, but that would probably be hugely attractive to the raft of teens and tweens who will be queuing up to spend their parents’ money on the game.

Personally, we’d rather have a game where you play as Left Shark from Ms Perry’s Superbowl half-time show. Bashing buttons at random allows you to awkwardly shuffle about the place and you win the game if you accidentally knock Katy off the stage.

Katy Perry: The Game will hit app stores later this year, most likely iOS and Android.

With a representative for Glu adding “Glu is focused on building the premier Hollywood gaming platform,” we anticipate that Katy Perry won’t be the last celebrity to be given her own game. But the question is: who’s next?

We hope it’s Gary Busey, but we’re not holding our breath.
