With all the recent chatter about Ice Cream Sandwich – with users keen to know when it’ll be landing on their HTC, Samsung or Motorola device – you might be forgiven for thinking it’s the most popular version of the Android operating system.
However, details revealed on the Android Developers website show that take-up of ICS is minimal so far compared with previous versions of the OS.
Just 2.9 per cent of Android users run Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0 to 4.0.3), while Gingerbread (Android 2.3 to 2.3.7) is used by 63.7 per cent. Froyo (Android 2.2) is in second place with 23.1 per cent.
The information is based on the number of Android devices that have accessed Google Play within a two-week period.
The website suggests that this data can be used to help developers create apps at the right level to reach the widest market.
“This can help you understand the landscape of device distribution and decide how to prioritise the development of your application features for the devices currently in the hands of users,” the Android Developers study said.
