HTC Desire 820’s 8-megapixel front camera is the ultimate selfie machine

HTC’s latest Desire, the mighty 5.5-inch HTC Desire 820, packs an insanely big 8-megapixel front camera for the ultimate selfies, plus a spacious HD screen and a 13-megapixel rear snapper.

Already at IFA 2014 we’ve seen huge releases from Sony and Samsung, but now HTC has elbowed its way in with the phablet-esque Desire 820. As well as a big screen, the Desire 820 brings an 8-megapixel front-facing camera to the party, plus a 13-megapixel main sensor.

That 8-meg front camera comes with HTC’s usual simple interface, meaning you can hit the shutter key to trigger a countdown to your selfie. When your shot’s been taken, you can merge yourself into another photo with a mate or a celebrity. So, you could pretend to be best mates with Benedict Cumberbatch. All your friends (if you have any) will think you’re all amazing and stuff.

On the back you get a 13-megapixel camera with an f/2.2 aperture lens, which can shoot good photos in low light – or so HTC claims. We’ll be testing it out in full when we review the Desire 820. You also have a flash for when things get really dark.

The 5.5-inch screen matches LG’s G3 smartphone, although sadly the display isn’t quite edge-to-edge like the G3’s, so it will feel a bit bulkier. Still, HTC has promised high-definition visuals, which we’re guessing means 720p since this is a mid-range mobile.

On the front of the Desire 820 we’re pleased to see HTC’s BoomSound speakers make an illustrious return. These dual speakers should hopefully deliver a powerful sound directly at your face when listening to tunes or playing a movie. Combined with the spacious HD screen, this is as much a phone for movie lovers as it is selfie obsessors.

Complete with 64-bit processing, the HTC Desire 820 looks to be a seriously decent mid-range mobile. We’ll bring you a full review soon.
