Huawei P9 Lite unboxing & hands-on review

We unboxed the new Huawei P9 Lite; the more affordable sibling to the Chinese phone maker’s most powerful handset yet. Here’s our hands-on review.

Screen SIZE 5.2-inches
screen resolution Full HD (1920×1080)
WEIGHT 147 grams
OS Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow
REAR CAMERA 13-megapixel
FRONT CAMERA 8-megapixel
PROCESSOR 1.7GHz/2.0GHz octa-core Kirin 650
MEMORY 2GB RAM
STORAGE 16GB. Expandable via microSD up to 128GB
BATTERY 3000mAh

Whilst the P9 Lite doesn’t come with the standard P9’s £380 price tag, that hasn’t stopped Huawei from sticking it in a clean, premium looking box. The thick satin finish card is devoid of pretty much any external information with the exception of the company’s and the phone’s logos embellishing its side and top respectively, finished in copper colour foil.

Lift the lid and the P9 Lite is the first thing you’re presented with, wrapped by screen and body protectors on the front and back, whilst also coming in a sealed bag for extra padding. The rear peel-off protector also highlights the phone’s NFC plate as wall as where to locate its volume rocker and hybrid SIM/microSD tray, which accepts cards up to 128GBs.

The phone itself may be called the ‘Lite’ but it’s actually larger in all directions and a touch heavier (at 147 grams vs 144 grams) than the standard P9. The thicker proportions give it slightly deeper bezels, as it shares in the P9’s 5.2-inch Full HD LCD panel.

Flip the phone over and on the back you’ll find a centrally positioned fingerprint sensor, an offset single 13-megapixel camera with an LED flash and plastic in place of the regular P9’s metal unibody (although the phone’s sides are still metal). Whilst we had our hands on the black model, the Lite also comes in gold and silver colourways too.

Lifting the phone tray from the box reveals three smaller card containers compartmentalising the paperwork (quick-start guide and warranty information) on the right, power adapter in the bottom left and microUSB lead and in-ear headphones in the top right.

At the time of writing, the Huawei P9 Lite proves to be a tricky handset to get ahold of, with EE being the only carrier to offer it and no SIM-free pricing readily available. Stay tuned for more information and a full review of the phone soon.
