iPad 3 begins production, slated for Q1 2012 release

The third iteration of Apple’s iPad may already have gone into production, according to industry analyst Jeff Fidacaro of Susquehanna Financial.

Fidacaro says that the first wave of iPad 3s are being constructed in China right now, alongside the last batch of the current iPad 2. “Since our last month supply chain checks we are now seeing 600,000 to one million iPad 3 builds showing up on the plan for the fourth quarter of calendar 2011.” Said Fidacaro.

The last two generations of iPads have both been released around the same time each year, launching in March in both the States and in Western Europe. Apple are usually pretty good about their yearly release cycles (the 18-month iPhone 4S debacle aside), so we’d expect the same release window for Apple’s third iPad next year.

Expected on the next iPad are the obligatory processor bump and (fingers tightly crossed) the same Retina Display technology found in the iPhone 4 and 4S.
