iPhone 5 rumours: bigger screen, more memory, modified chip

You can keep your Easter egg hunts and scoffing more chocolate than is advisable – here at Recombu we’re hungry for news about the Apple iPhone 5 and we didn’t have to search long to bag some cracking bits of gossip.

First up, analyst Brian White from Topeka Capital Markets has just finished a tour of technology factories in China and Taiwan and was pretty excited about what he saw.

“In our view, this will be the most significant iPhone upgrade with a four-inch screen and a new, sleek look that we believe will require a Unibody case,” the Business Insider reported.

So when can we expect all this rumour mongering to end and the iPhone 5 to finally arrive?

“Our sense is that some suppliers will begin production of certain components during the month of June, however, this does not necessarily mean the iPhone 5 will launch in June or even July. In our view, a August/September launch may make more sense given the iPhone 4S was just launched in October 2011,” White added.

Meanwhile, a firmware update has got tongues wagging that Apple is already testing some iPhone 5 handsets, which have been cleverly hidden within iPhone 4S bodies so as not to be spotted in the wild.

“This iPhone that we are describing is an internal-only unit built for testing the performance of a new chip in an iPhone, not an actual phone that Apple will produce,” a report on 9to5mac.com said.

The prototypes are thought to use a version of the A5X processor used in the new Apple iPad 3 and have the same 1GB of memory as the tablet PC.

All of which suggests the usual queues outside Apple stores and insane levels of hype come August/September. White agrees.

“We believe the iPhone 5 ramp for the December quarter could be extraordinary, dwarfing previous launches and driving the stock closer to our $1,001 price target,” the analyst said.
