iPhone 5 to be worldwide-compatible handset?

The next iPhone from Apple will be able to use both GSM and CDMA networks, according to TechCrunch.

The phone would be capable of working on CDMA (used by huge networks Sprint and Verizon in the US) and GSM (which we use in the UK). This means you’d be able to use the phone abroad on any network – after a quick SIM switch.

It isn’t first time it’s been rumoured, but now some more concrete evidence has appeared from an anonymous app developer. According to app usage logs, a few devices were logged running the very latest iOS software and a “dual mode” supporting both CDMA and GSM.

Some registrations for as-yet-unnamed app were logged from a new Apple device, using unique phone codes from both Verizon and AT&T phone networks. AT&T uses GSM like UK networks.

Apple has previously made phones in both GSM and CDMA flavours, but this would be the first time they would appear together.
