Lumia 950 and 950 XL leak reveals metal, 2K screens and more

Leaked specs from the first pair of Windows 10 flagship smartphones promise to deliver killer design, cameras and USB-C.

Microsoft’s long rumoured Talkman and Cityman devices have just broken cover courtesy of Chinese site ItHome.com and if what they say is to be believed, these smartphones are going to pack a punch.

Originally expected to adopt the 940 numbering, it would appear that Microsoft’s first Windows 10-powered flagship smartphones will sport the 950 moniker instead, perhaps in a bid to highlight to consumers that this is more of a significant step up over the company’s previous top handset, the Lumia 930.

Whilst there are some obvious differences the Microsoft Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL are both expected to adopt premium metal bodies, sport removable batteries, Quad HD displays, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of inbuilt storage with microSD expandability and reversible Type-C USB connectors.

Both are expected to offer 20-megapixel rear-cameras, which we’re in little doubt will be excellent, backed up by 5-megapixel front-facing offerings. Continuum – a cornerstone of the Windows 10 experience will be possible via and additional cable (sold separately) to offer a desktop-like computing experience.

Whilst the DNA between these two handsets looks to be unmistakable, there will be some obvious and some not-so-obvious variations. Most notably will be the difference in size. Similarly to Samsung’s flagship devices occupying two notably different scales, so too will the 950 and 950 XL. The smaller of the two will feature a 5.2-inch panel, like the Xperia Z3+, whilst the 950 XL will adopt a phablet-friendly 5.7-inch frontage.

A bigger phone can also accommodate a larger power plant and the XL is expect to feature a 3300mAh battery versus the 950’s anticipated 3000mAh effort. Perhaps the most interesting variation is the possibility of each device drawing on a different processor. The 950 is said to boast Qualcomm’s hexa-core Snapdragon 808 SOC, the same one found on the LG G4, whilst the phablet may utilise the much maligned Snapdragon 810 octa-core chip.

The only other potential difference between these two, and in our opinion, the wildest of the purported specs is that for some reason, the 950 XL may feature a triple-LED camera flash as opposed to the more conventional dual-LED flash we’re used to.

It’s anyone’s guess how close to the truth these spec sheets actually, but if there even in this ballpark, we can expect Microsoft’s first Windows 10 flagship smartphones to pack a punch that won’t go unnoticed by the rest of the mobile industry.
