If the ridiculous size of the new Moto G4 smartphones made you skip an upgrade, you might be more tempted by Motorola’s Moto E3 handset, a more compact 5-inch mobile that packs some impressive specs for an even cheaper price. Alternatively, the Moto G4 Play is now coming to the UK too, also offering a more comfortable 5-inch alternative.
As much as we love the Moto G4 and the Moto G4 Plus, these great-value smartphones are unnecessarily massive at 5.5-inches each. And while we appreciate a larger screen for enjoying movies and games on the go, we’re definitely bigger fans of more compact mobiles which are comfortable to use one-handed. Thankfully Motorola hasn’t completely snubbed fans of dinky blowers, as it’s just launched two new 5-inch phones here in the UK: the sub-£100 Moto E3 and the third member of the Moto G4 family, the more compact Moto G4 Play.
Moto E3 officially launched
This is the newest member of the Moto E family, which makes us very excited indeed; after all, Motorola’s 2015 Moto E model, called the Moto E 4G, was one of our favourite budget mobiles of recent times.
The Moto E3 is even cheaper than the Moto G4, with a sub-£100 UK asking price, yet still packs some impressive specs including an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2800mAh battery. Best of all, the Moto E3 sports a more compact 5-inch HD screen, so it should prove much easier to handle than the rest of the Moto G4 family.

Moto G4 Play coming to the UK at last
Motorola has also just launched a UK version of the Moto G4 Play, a cheaper and more compact version of the Moto G4 that costs just £129, thanks to its stripped-back features. With a smaller 5-inch screen compared to the G4 and G4 Plus’ mighty 5.5-inch panels, the Moto G4 Play will be a lot more enticing to anyone turned off by bigger blowers.
However, the Moto G4 Play isn’t just dinkier than the other G4 phones. In fact, the G4 Play is almost identical to last year’s Moto G3 in many ways, making do with the older Snapdragon 410 processor while also dialling back the screen resolution to 720p. The G4 Play’s rear camera is also a more basic 8-megapixel offering, which on paper makes it inferior to the Moto G3’s excellent 13-megapixel snapper (although the prowess of a smartphone camera hinges on much more than a mere megapixel count, of course).
The Moto G4 Play will hit the UK in mid-August, with an asking price of £129.
