Nokia announces Lumia 830, Lumia 735 and Denim software update

Never short of a launch or two at IFA, Nokia has launched the Lumia 830 and 735 (plus 730 dual SIM) along with Lumia Denim that makes Cortana more accessible on Nokia handsets.

Nokia, or rather Microsoft Devices Group as it’s now known says the Lumia 830 is the first affordable flagship on the market.

Like previous Lumia flagships, it will be available in a rainbow of colours including silver, orange, green, black and white and looks pretty similar to the rest of the range, with curved sides and a soft finish.

It’s made of aluminium, but the back is the usual polycarbonate, with wireless charging built in.

It’s the thinnest Lumia, measuring just, but that doesn’t mean it scrimps on features. Packed into the super-slim chassis, there’s a 10-megapixel PureView camera that operates alongside the thinnest optical image stabilisation chip yet.

The Lumia 830 runs on Windows 8.1 with a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage.

The 5-inch device features a display with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels rather than the stunning 1080p display seen on the Lumia 930.

The Nokia Lumia will be priced at €330 (£265) SIM free and will be shipping later this month.

Not to miss a trend, Microsoft has jumped on the selfie train with the Lumia 735 and Lumia 730 dual SM for developing markets.

To make this a ‘selfie phone’, Nokia has packed a 5-megapixel camera on the front of the handset, meaning hopefully, grainy profile pictures will be a thing of the past.

It’s aimed at younger generations we presume, because although it’s available in a range of quirky colours, it will also include interchangeable back covers for those who just can’t make up their mind.

Specs include a 4.7-inch 1280×720 HD display and a 6.7-megapixel camera around the back for those who prefer to take pictures of scenery – or their friends taking selfies.

It’ll ship with Windows 8.1, with Lumia Denim preinstalled, with a removable 2220 mAh battery.

Inside, you’ll find 1GB of RAM and Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 (MSM8926) 1.2 GHz quad-core processor powering the show.

The Lumia 735 features 4G LTE and will go on sale for €219 (£175).

Lumia Denim software update

The Lumia 930, Lumia 1520 and Lumia Icon will all be getting a software update called Lumia Denim to make features easier to use, like Cortana.

As is with the case on Android devices using Google Now, you can command the Cortana personal assistant to start, just by saying ‘Hey Cortana’.

Lumia Camera is also getting a speed update in Lumia Denim. It’ll be faster to take a picture, with a software enhancement behind the hardware camera key making it faster to respond to your touch.

Additionally, long-pressing the camera button now starts the phone recording 4K video on devices that have Lumia Denim installed. Although it’ll start rolling out on the three newest devices, it’ll be available on all Lumia devices later in the year.
