Pokémon GO’s Valentine’s Day event update: What to expect

It’s time for another seasonal Pokémon GO special event, this time, in the form of a pretty-in-pink Valentine’s Day update. That means more blush beasties, coral-coloured creatures and heaps more candy.

If like us you’re still playing Pokémon GO, news of a new special event should brighten up your day as Niantic has once again switched up the spawn rates of certain Pokémon between February 7th and February 15th.

During this season of love, you’ll start bumping into more members of the Pokémon family that adopt pink into their colour scheme somewhere. The official Pokémon Company press release makes mention of Clefable, Jigglypuff and Chansey by name, but we’ve noticed an uptick in Clefairy and Slowpoke appearances, whilst other players have more readily come across Wigglytuffs, Lickitungs and Porygons too.

Whilst the update doesn’t appear to have affected other pink ‘mon like Slowbro, Exeggcute and Mr. Mime, eggs have temporarily been reworked so that you have a greater chance of hatching Cleffa, Igglybuff or Smoochum.

Along with altered spawning behaviour, nothing says ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’ like a metric ton of candy. Much like Niantic’s 2016 Halloween update, the amount of candy up for grabs has been doubled, so you’ll receive six instead of three for catching a Pokémon, two instead of one for transferring a monster to Professor Willow and your buddy Pokémon will find candy twice as frequently too.

Hatching eggs offers the greatest potential yield in a single hit, however, with standard amounts randomly ranging from 3 to 35 candies per hatched egg being doubled, meaning you could nab yourself up to 70 candies from a single egg!

Arguably the biggest change in effect during this special event is lure longevity, which has been boosted from a measly 30 minutes to a whopping six hours.

The update is available now and if you’re not sure whether it’s in play, just keep your eyes peeled for more pink Pokémon popping up. Why not spend the day with your significant other chasing Chanseys, or if you don’t have a special someone to celebrate with, pick up as many Porygons as you can handle.
