Reckless Racing for real on a Sony Xperia S and Xperia Play

You have to admire Sony’s efforts to promote the gaming angle of its Android phones with its life-sized promotions. Sony’s Xperia Studio teamed up with game developers Pixelbite to re-create a level from Reckless Racing 2 on a disused strip of RAF land.

Two heavily modified MGF sports cars were kitted out with radio-controlled pistons and levers by Dr. James Brighton, an engineer who specialises in making “full-sized remote control cars.”

These were then controlled by custom apps that had been installed on a Sony Xperia S and a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play.

The cars were then raced around a full-scale, real-life facsimile of a track from Reckless Racing 2. The cars were controlled by Martin Noriander, creator of Reckless Racing 2 and Pocket-lint’s Hunter Skipworth also formerly of these shores.

Last year we saw Sony do something similar with a pair of Xperia Plays and five-a-side indoor football. Though we liked the idea, this Reckless Racing tie-in takes things to the next level. We’re still waiting for the inevitable real-life Minecraft-using-the-cast-of-Time Team video to be made a reality.

Until then, you can check out the video of the fun below plus a video of how everything was put together.
