Recombu Awards 2014 – The Winners

As you may already be aware, last week on Thursday November 6th, we had our annual Recombu awards ceremony. Our mobile, car, and digital sites all gave out a variety of awards that night and here, for your perusal, is the complete list of winners.

Best Phone: LG G3

There have been some great phones released this year. The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact and the HTC One M8 both came very close to winning the title, as did the super-skinny, super-large iPhone 6. However, this award went to the LG G3. We absolutely loved its Quad HD resolution, along with its slim and light design.

Best Value Phone: Moto G

Our Best Value Phone for 2014 was none other than the immensely popular Moto G. This probably won’t come as much as a surprise to many given its widespread critical acclaim. Other contenders included Huawei’s Ascend G6 4G and Nokia’s Lumia 635.

Best Tablet: iPad Air

The winner here was the Apple iPad Air, which in our view fixed all the problems of the iPad 4 — the biggest being the fact it was a tad too bulky to carry on long journeys. There no such problems with the Air due to its sleek and slender design, which makes holding the 10inch screen effortless in contrast to its predecessor.

Best Accessory: Jawbone UP24

The Jawbone UP24 is our favorite accessory this year. This wearable device allows users to monitor their daily activities as well as check how much sleep they’re are getting. In addition to this it allows users to check how much damage they will be doing to their waistline by scanning the barcodes of each item of food they purchase.

Best Family Car: Nissan Qashqai

The winner of this award was the car that earlier this year became the fastest British car to sell 200,000 units — and for good reason. Our winner is none other than the Nissan Qashqai. We were most impressed with its practicality, the ease with which it drives, its low running costs and its gorgeous slooks.

Best Performance Car: BMW i8

The beastly hybrid i8 saw off some fierce competition from the likes of the Lamborghini Huracan, the Jaguar F-Type R Coupe, and the Porsche 911 GT3. We absolutely loved the fact that this car helps save the planet without being a total bore to drive. The same can’t be said for other hybrids.

Best Luxury Car: Mercedes-Benz S-Class

It was extremely difficult selecting the winner here. We absolutely loved the Rolls-Royce Wraith, not to mention the Porsche Panamera. However the judges opted for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Its classy looks, fabulously comfortable interior and space-age tech tipped the balance in its favour.

Best On-Demand TV Service

It was no easy choice but we finally decided to go with the revamped BBC Iplayer. The new interface makes finding your favourite content easier than ever before. Also, its unified design means that regardless of the device you’re using, your experience should be roughly the same. It saw of some fierce competition from the likes of Netflix and Amazon prime.

Best Broadband and Digital Package: TalkTalk Plus TV

TalkTalk Plus TV with Fibre took the award this year. This great value package includes a TV service with seven Sky TV channels, fast broadband and a free YouView-based smart TV box. A range of premium sky channels are also availabe for an additional fee. Other nominees were Virgin Media’s Big Kahuna bundle, BT Vision with Sky Sports 1, 2 and 5 and Sky Sports with 2 years of free Sky Broadband.

Best Smart Home Product: Google Chromecast

The award here goes to Google Chromecast. The mini streaming stick is very user friendly and supports a wide range of great media apps, allowing them to be used on your tv. Another bonus is the fact it’s incredibly affordable. Honourable mentions go to British Gas Hive and the Nest Learning Thermostat.

Reader Award – Best Mobile Phone Network 2014: EE

Yet again EE has proven itself to be a real fan favorite as our readers voted it the Best Mobile Phone Network for 2014. This has come as no real surprise as EE now offers 4G to over 250 UK towns – making it the country’s largest 4G provider.

Reader Award – Best Broadband or TV Provider 2014: Sky

Sky won this year’s award by a landslide. The ability to watch your favourite films, dramas, and sports on up to four mobile devices with Sky Go undoubtedly played a huge role in this. Also, its on-demand library is second to none, plus it offers broadband download speeds of up to 76Mbps.

Reader Award – Best Car Manufacturer 2014: BMW

BMW has churned out an unfathomable number of cars this year, all of which have been very good. This consistent approach and the huge variety of products it now offers resonates well with consumers. The fact it released two of the best cars of the last 12 months — in the form of the BMW i3 and i8 — doesn’t hurt, either.
