Samsung Galaxy Beam: Android phone with an HD projector

There’s not going to be any Galaxy S3 action at Mobile World Congress but that won’t stop Samsung from dazzling us with new gadgets like the Samsung Galaxy Beam.

An Android 2.3 Gingerbread phone with a 4-inch 800×480 (WVGA) screen and 1GHz dual-core processor, the Samsung Galaxy Beam’s specs read like a high-end phone from last year. But the key feature of the Galaxy Beam is the projector.

Capable of producing high-definition projections on flat surfaces up to 50-inches wide, the Samsung Galaxy Beam can play back video in 720p HD at up to 30 frames per second, making it a bona fide movie projector. You can also project maps, presentations and games, using a dedicated app which makes it easy to sling content into the projector. Supported video formats include MPEG4, H.263, H.264, WMV and DivX.

The Samsung Galaxy Beam’s projector has a brightness of 15 lumens which Samsung says makes it ideal for projecting in outdoor locations as well as indoors.

Simon Stanford, UK & Ireland Telecommunications and Networks Division said in a statement: “The Samsung Galaxy Beam gives people freedom to share what’s important to them instantly with friends and family. With the Galaxy Beam, people can share content from their smartphone with people around them, using it like a pocket projector to create shared experiences – whether that’s watching movies, sharing holiday snaps or a spontaneous presentation.”

Samsung Galaxy Beam: Astral projection

Despite the built-in projector, the Samsung Galaxy Beam is pretty skinny, measuring 64.2 x 124 x 12.5mm and weighing 145.3 grams.

Other specs include a 5-megapixel main camera (LED flash, 720p HD video recording at 30fps) and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. 6GB of RAM comes included to handle processes and there’s 8GB of on-board storage plus room for up to 32GB extra via microSD.

The Samsung Galaxy Beam will be on show at Mobile World Congress which kicks off tomorrow; stay tuned for hands-on pics and first impressions.
