Samsung has just unveiled a new wave of shiny Android handsets including the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini.
Designed to be held in one hand, the compacted S5 comes with some solid specifications. The screen is a bright, vivid affair with a 4.5-inch 720p HD Super AMOLED panel. It also packs an 8-megapixel main-snapper and a 2.1-megapixel front-facer.
It also comes with a quad-core 1.4GHz CPU, backed up with 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. If that’s not enough, it can be extended with any microSD that’s under 64GB.
Samsung followed HTC’s school of thought, rather than Sony’s, with the specs of the S5 Mini being notably less powerful than the full-sized S5, although that’s not to say the it isn’t perfectly suited to the majority of users. The device is also significantly more capable with its predecessor – the Samsung S4 Mini – which had a 4.3-inch qHD (960×540) display and a dual-core processor.
Perhaps most importantly, Samsung has made sure all the things that define the Galaxy S5 have been carried over, including its IP67 certified dust and water resistance, Ultra Power Saving Mode, heart rate monitor, fingerprint scanner and the ability to connect with the latest Samsung wearables.
Samsung is yet to announce availability for the UK, although they have announced that the device will have its premiere in Russia in early July, before eventually making its way to these shores. It’s safe to assume that the slightly less powerful G5 Mini will come at a more pocket-friendly price, given the slightly weaker specifications and the smaller size.
The announcement that Samsung is updating its Galaxy Mini offerings comes on the back of the phone maker also announcing its expanded Galaxy line.
Three new devices have been announced, including the Galaxy Trend 2, which packs a slightly anemic 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM and a 1500mAh battery packed into a stylish frame; the Galaxy Young 2, which comes with a 1GHz single-core CPU, a 3MP camera and an HVGA display; and the Samsung Galaxy Core 2, which promises slightly meatier specs, including a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, a 4.5-inch display and 768MB of RAM.
