Samsung Hercules: Galaxy S2 variant revealed

Pictures have emerged showing what appears to be a new addition to the Samsung Galaxy S2 series: the Samsung Hercules, which is due to land on T-Mobile in Canada

Named the SGH-T989, a selection of pictures from TMO News clearly show the words Galaxy S II on the back. However the specifications between the two phones appear to be slightly different.

Running Android Gingerbread 2.3 the Hercules includes a larger 4.5-inch screen and allegedly a 1.2 Ghz dual-core Qualcomm processor, with 1GB RAM and 16GB internal memory. In addition it appears the phone will be the first T-Mobile device with 42Mbps HSDPA+.

Some additional pictures from Pocket Now show the front of the phone with the screen turned on and it certainly seems similar to the UK version of Samsung Galaxy SII, albeit with more curved edges and without the central control button, instead there are touch-sensitive menu, home, back and search controls. In fact it’s a lot closer in design to the Google Nexus S, which was of course made by Samsung.

It’s also supposed to have Netflix pre-installed, with a new Calendar app and it appears the phone will be joining Telus’ lineup in Canada in September.

From the brief pictures we’ve seen, first impressions are impressive. The Hercules has a striking metal back instead of the plastic back of the Galaxy S2.

There’s no news yet on whether this will be coming to the UK, but we’ll let you know if we hear anything else.
