Sky Sports News is App of the Year at Carphone Warehouse Appys

The winners of the Carphone Warehouse Appys 2012 have just been announced, with Sky, You Tube and Rovio among the big winners.

Now in its second year, the Carphone Warehouse Appys are the world’s first major awards ceremony dedicated purely to apps.

Prizes are awarded across 12 categories and the winners were announced in a star-studded bash at Battersea Power Station.

App of the Year was awarded to Sky Sports News, which was also crowned Bes Sports App.  Best Game was given to Angry Birds; You Tube was a double winner with nods for Best Music and Best Celebrity & Entertainment ; Domino’s Pizza triumped over Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsey in the Best Food & Cooking category (Two for Tuesday’s are obviously really popular). Best Photograph & Video app was awarded to Adobe Photoshop Express, Best Travel app was Google Maps and Best Money Saving Groupon.

Andrew Harrison, CEO of Carphone Warehouse said, It’s estimated that in 2012, mobile users will download nearly 36 billion apps. In fact, the fast pace in which apps are developing led us to introduce some new categories for 2012 in recognition of this thriving market…

‘We’re very proud to award Appys to some new contenders this year. NHS Direct winning Best Health & Wellbeing is a favourite winner of mine and it’s great to see apps across all twelve categories getting the recognition they deserve.’

The shortlist of five apps per category were selected by a panel of judges, before being opened up to the public vote, which this year saw 115,000 votes cast. You can read the full list of winners here.
