Sony Ericsson Cybershot: Is this their new Android phone?

While the Xperia Arc may currently hold the position of best cameraphone in Sony Ericsson’s family of smartphone, these scrambled images look like they could be preparing to sell a cybershot-branded touchscreen phone.

Cybershot is the point-and-shoot branch of Sony’s camera branch, and several phones have carried the name, including the 8.1 megapixel Sony Ericsson C905.

Grab a fist-full of salt with this leak. At this degree of blur, it’s very difficult to tell whether this is a real deal or not. That’s most definately Cyber-shot written beneath the screen just there, although that looks like a lower-case ‘c’, that’s typically upper-case on their cameras.

The design of those Android-esque buttons at the bottom of the handset also have more than a passing resemblance to those seen on the recently announced Xperia Mini and Xperia Mini Pro.

If this is a new camera-centric smartphone from Sony Ericsson, we’re confused as to why there’s no picture of the back- you know, where the camera would be. The picture of the phone at an angle suggest that this phone could be very, very thin. Would there be enough space for clever camera gubbins?

Given the recent shoe-horning of Sony’s Bravia arm into screen technology on their phones, and the PlayStation-branded Xperia Play, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see more Sony branding arrive on the next wave of smartphones.

We’ve been in contact with Sony Ericsson for comment, and are waiting for their response. Sony Ericsson have been particularly leaky- phones like the Xperia Play, and Xperia Pro Mini were spotted and snapped several months before being officially announced.

UPDATE: A spokesperson for Sony Ericsson has told us that they do not comment on rumour and speculation. I guess we’ll wait and see.
