Sony Ericsson’s PlayStation phone has been mooted for many moons. Rumours have vaguely abounded and certain sections of the population have got themselves really quite excited about the prospect. Finally there’s something a bit more concrete to get het up over, as Engadget has shaken down a trusted source to discover that Sony Ericsson is, and has been for some time, “actively and heavily developing a brand new gaming platform, ecosystem, and device”.
Pretty exciting news for gamers. Here’s what to get your hopes up over: the PlayStation phone is set to be a landscape slider but with gaming controls instead of that pesky Qwerty keyboard. Housed in a black and sliver chassis, the screen will be at least WVGA resolution, if not better, on a display somewhere between 3.7inches and 4.1inches. Behind all that there’s set to be a 1GHz snapdragon processor. The 5-megapixel camera is unconfirmed.
Excitingly, the PlayStation phone will be running Android 3.0 (Gingerbread), and there’ll be a whole new area of the Android Market dedicated to PSP-style games. Graphically, Engadget says, it will be equal to the PSP which means that we can expect true 3D gaming to make an appearance. There’s also the potential for augmented reality to be woven in there too.
It’s gone straight onto our Christmas wishlists, since Engadget’s source suggested that it could be in our hands as early as October this year. The sensible parts of our brains say that sounds a little soon, so we won’t be surprised if the PlayStation phone remains a pleasant dream until early next year.
Engadget has done a sterling job mocking up the image above, but it is just an informed illustration so don’t set too much stock by it.
