Sony Xperia Z4 users complain of overheating: what’s the cause?

Some Japanese users are finding the Sony Xperia Z4 too hot to handle, taking to the internet to complain about their fiery new phones. And you’ll never guess where the blame seems to lie.

Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo may be the first telco in the world to launch Sony’s Xperia Z4 but it’s also the first to deal with the severe overheating issues that are reportedly afflicting the device. In fact, the company had to field so many complaints that it’s slapped a warning label on the device.

The eagle-eyed among you will have no doubt spotted the fact that the Xperia Z4 – or Xperia Z3+ as it’s known here in the UK – is kitted out with Qualcomm’s ‘totally fine’ Snapdragon 810, a chip which has attracted a fair pile of criticism for alleged overheating issues in its short life.

The fact that the chip could be causing issues in Sony’s newest flagship isn’t likely to bode well for either carrier or chip maker and the news could resonate even further, leading people to give other devices fitted with the Snapdragon 810 a wide berth. That includes the HTC One M9, which itself has had thermal issues already, LG’s G Flex 2 and, if rumours prove accurate, the OnePlus 2, which is expected to drop around September.

Since the Snapdragon 810 first launched, testers and users have noted its tendency toward overheating and Qualcomm even went back to the drawing board and apparently fixed the issue. But with more and more complaints of hot devices hitting the internet, our prediction that the Snapdragon 810 is a massive bomb appears to sadly be true.

Sony is sure to be both concerned and angered by the occurrence of heat-related issues in its latest flagship, which will soon hit the UK as the Xperia Z3+, especially as the heat issues were reportedly sorted. Users have taken to social media as well as filing direct complaints, with the likes of Twitter showing signs of disgruntlement from early adopters.

NTT DoCoMo’s public acceptance that there is indeed an issue wih the Snapdragon 810 will be seen as a glaring indictment of the already troubled processor too. However, with the Snapdragon 808 performing well in the likes of the LG G4, we’re confident that Qualcomm can put this admittedly major stumble behind and get back to producing some of the best mobile chips around.
