Sony’s Xperia Z4 smartphone leaks

Anyone who’s just splashed out for Sony’s Xperia Z3, look away now. It seems the Xperia Z4 may have leaked already, and if this isn’t some kind of hoax, it looks like Sony’s next smartphone could be another glorious slab of sexy tech.

According to the leak, which has spread from the same source that outed the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, the device will feature a huge 5.5-inch display, finally boasting a ‘Quad HD‘ 2560 x 1440 resolution, matching the LG G3. And while the camera is still a 20.7-megapixel effort, a new curved Exmor RS CMOS sensor has been used. Curved sensors can apparently reduce noise in images and deal with tricky light better than flat sensors, so this will hopefully make the already-awesome Xperia camera even better.

In addition to that optical goodness, the device is said to sport a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC, giving the device eight cores to play with. There will also be 4GB of RAM stuffed inside, alongside 32GB of on-board storage and the usual memory card slot.

The leaker made no mention of a 16GB model, so we’re unsure at this early stage whether Sony has nixed the smaller version in favour of the more practical 32GB version.

These leaks also revealed that Sony allegedly intends to scale back its product releases to just one flagship device a year, which for Xperia Z3 owners will be rather bittersweet news. This will represent a significant change for the company, which has previously pushed out two flagship devices each year (usually in spring and autumn).

It seems like a wise move, especially given the 18-24 month plans that many consumers end up caught in. No one wants to splash out on an expensive new phone, only to find it outdated just a couple of months later.

The Xperia Z4 will reportedly take its bow at Mobile World Congress 2015, and we expect to see it launch in the UK soon after.
