Suppliers stepping up LCD production for 7.85-inch Apple iPad Mini?

Following on from last week’s rumour that the iPad Mini will launch with iPhone 5 in October-time and for only around $250, now we’re hearing LG and AU Optronics have been certified to supply a 7.85-inch LCD panel for the device and a shipping date for the panels has been set for the second half of 2012.

The story comes from Taiwan’s Liberty Times (via 9to5 Mac) and claims 6 million LCDs will ship, with TPK Holding producing around 4 million backlit modules and Chemi Innoluz producing the remaining 2 million. It reports that Nissha Printing will be the sole provider of the touch film sensor.

The rumoured low price (around $250) and of course the lower screen size will put Apple’s iPad mini right in the crux of the latest smaller tablets. Amazon for example has proved a huge success with its Kindle range and Apple will hope to gain market share with this iPad.

Of course Apple has remained tight-lipped about the iPad Mini and it may all just be a fabrication of the rumour-mill, but we can certainly see the benefits of a low-cost tablet. Although the late Steve Jobs was always against a 7-inch tablet – what do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
