Tag Heuer Racer: £2300 Android phone for the rich and famous

The Tag Heuer Racer is the rich man’s Android phone, literally. The angular body is crafted from tough titanium and carbon fibre and has a design that’s apparently inspired by “TAG Heuer heritage in GT cars and Formula 1,” which is where the ‘Racer’ name presumably comes from.

With some sharp angles and exposed metal screws it comes on like a souped-up turbo-charged Motorola Defy+ sans dust bungs and water protection – the touchscreen is however protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass. Looks to be a bit of an air gap judging by the video though.

The video shows off four buttons on the front of the phone, suggesting, as CNET points out, Android 2.3 Gingerbread being the OS version. It could just as easily have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on there – four buttons doesn’t necessarily mean no Ice Cream – or an Android 4.0 overhaul might be in the pipeline.

With a £2,300 price tag and an unconventional design, its perhaps aimed at those with a top heavy money : taste ratio.

Luxury phones aren’t anything new to the mobile market; Nokia’s Vertu division has been cranking out several high-grade material phones and we’ve seen iPhone cases sacrilegiously crafted from dinosaur bones. BlackBerry and Porsche recently teamed up on the BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9981 – a phone so posh you have to buy it from Harrods.

The new iPad might set you back a pretty penny – £659 at the very most – but if you really want to flash your cash then the Tag Heuer Racer looks to be where its at.
