Two new Nexus phones for 2015, but no new Google tablets?

Google is reportedly preparing two fresh new Nexus phones for release this year, signalling a return of confidence in the program despite iffy releases in 2014. But if rumours are right, there’s no Nexus tablet for 2015.

Fresh off the back of rumours that Google is working to deliver better battery life and performance in the next version of Android (dubbed MNC or Macadamia Nut Cookie for some bizarre reason), we’ve also heard that the company has commissioned a pair of new Nexus devices, due for release this October.

The first new Nexus phone, going by the aquatic codename Angler, will reportedly be a 5.2-inch device produced by LG. The Angler is rumoured to feature a battery of around 2,700mAh and a Snapdragon 808 chip, making it as close as a vanilla Android LG G4 as you’re likely to get.

The second device will be made by Taiwanese manufacturer Huawei and has been codenamed Bullhead. The Bullhead sounds as if it’s being lined up as a slightly more pocket-friendly replacement for the Nexus 6, as it will offer a 5.7-inch display, 3,500mAh battery and a Snapdragon 810 processor.

Hopefully Qualcomm’s chip will have been tweaked to ensure that long-standing thermal issues don’t affect performance, and the phone won’t get hot enough to actually bake those macadamia cookies on.

It’s good to see that Google hasn’t completely ditched its hardware output despite last year’s Nexus 6 phone and Nexus 9 tablet apparently bombing. The high price tags and lack of impressive features proved those devices’ downfall, so we’re hoping that Google has learned its lesson and will price the new Nexus phones competitively, while still packing in amazing display and camera tech.

There’s no indication of when we can expect to clap eyes on these two new Nexus phones, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed that they might get shown off at Google I/O 2015, which gets under way on May 28.
