UPDATED: O2 network goes down in London, citing ‘network issue’

O2 customers in London have lost access to the UK phone network this morning.

The netowrk’s official status checker is now reporting that east London and Essex have been hit by the issue.

O2’s official Twitter account is currently responding to customers complaining of low, if any, signal reception.

HussainX complained of weird signal and then returning to the (low data) edge mode.

It’s another PR nightmare for O2, who suffered a similar coverage blow when vandals broke into their centre servicing the south-east and London. This affected their text, voice and 3G serices, and it looks like there are similar limitations on customers currently unable to connect to the O2 network.

We’ll be updating here once we here more from O2.

UPDATE: O2 have told us that:  “At 10 o’clock this morning we identified a connectivity issue on our network which is affecting both 2G and 3G service in parts of East London, North London, Kent and East Sussex.

“Customers in these areas may be experiencing difficulty in making or receiving mobile calls, texts or using data. Our engineers are working to identify the problem and resolve it as soon as possible.

We apologise to those customers affected and will be updating progress regularly.”

UPDATE 2: We’ve also been told that some customers may find switching 3G off on their phone may allow singla reception for calls. (Thanks Blottr!)

UPDATE 3:  At 12.30 O2 released another statement. It seems that the network has been restored. It was apparently due to engineering work, but we don’t know why this engineering work wasn’t publicised on the O2’s much-publicised status update site. We’re trying to contact O2 for a response.

“At 10 o’clock this morning we identified a connectivity issue on our network which affected both 2G and 3G service in parts of East London, North London, Kent and Essex.

“Some customers in these areas may have experienced difficulty in making or receiving mobile calls, texts or using data. The issue was the result of planned work designed to ensure the robustness of the network following theft and vandalism at a site in East London last month. Service was restored at 10.50am.

“We apologise to those customers affected and we continue to monitor service from the site.”

UPDATE 4: An O2 spokesperson told us that the engineering works, “were not intended to be customer impacting”.
