Earlier this week we brought you news of the first 7-inch Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet: the Huawei Media Pad. Since then more details have been emerging about what the new update will bring.
Google has yet to officially comment, but according to This Is My Next, the update bridges the gap between Android 3.1 and Ice Cream Sandwich. It adds support for Qualcomm dual-core Snapdragon chips, as well as 7-inch tablets, which makes sense looking at the specifications of the Huawei tablet.
In addition it will improve hardware acceleration, provide bug fixes and update Movie Studio, Movies, Music and Widgets.
Significantly support for 7-inch tablets could mean that the HTC Flyer gets an upgrade to Android 3.2. HTC has confirmed the tablet will get an Android upgrade, but wouldn’t confirm to Recombu if it will be Android 3.2 or not. We’d speculate that because HTC Sense is so crucial to the UI of the tablet, if 3.2 is a minor upgrade then it will make more sense for the company to wait for Ice Cream Sandwich. Although of course we’ll have to wait and see.
It’s a little surprising the update has come so quickly. The Android 3.1 update was fairly recent, adding more support for USB accessories including keyboard and joysticks, as well as the ability to resize widgets and Wi-Fi improvements. We know Ice Cream Sandwich is due to land in Q4 and will work across smartphones and tablets.
The Android 3.2 Honeycomb update will be available for current Honeycomb tablets like the Motorola Xoom and Acer Icona A500 in a few weeks, while 7-inch tablets will come in August.
