What Xperia phones are Sony Mobile launching on September 2nd?

Sony Mobile will be pulling back the curtain on one or more new smartphones on Wednesday September 2nd, but with conflicting reports and rumours firing across the internet, which ones can we trust?

So far this year, Sony has been really restrained on its flagship launches. In fact, we’ve only seen one new premium handset, the Xperia Z3+, hit UK stores, and even that was a basic update of an existing phone, the Xperia Z3.

Which means that Sony is going to explode our tiny little minds with some seriously sexy mobile tech at IFA 2015, the big tech expo that hits Berlin on September 2nd.

At first we were expecting Sony to reveal the Xperia Z5, which seemed like the logical name for a new Xperia flagship. After all, the Xperia Z3+ already stole the Xperia Z4 monicker over in Asia, so now we need to hastily skip over that one here in Europe, to avoid some horrific Mario-style naming cluster****.

The Xperia Z5 was rumoured to come packing a 5.2-inch screen and 20.7-megapixel camera as usual, but respectively boosted with Quad HD visuals and a super-smart 192-point auto-focus.

But then we heard fresh, contrasting rumours that Sony would be ditching the Xperia Z range entirely and starting afresh, with all-new S range handsets. The Xperia S60 and Xperia S70 are rumoured to be two differently-sized premium phones packing serious price tags, which makes us fairly sure that Sony is going for a total refresh and all-new design, both in hardware and software terms.

And this latest leak, which supposedly shows the Xperia Z5 alongside a new compact version and an iPhone 5s, backs up this theory. Here we have two new Sony handsets sporting a different design (immediately obvious by the lack of a circular power button on the right edge), packing what appears to be a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

From that shot, the new compact phone – likely to be Sony’s Xperia S60 – appears to be a similar size to the Xperia Z3 Compact. However, the suspiciously thick bezel at the bottom makes us think that this isn’t final hardware, and the actual phone will be even more pocket-friendly. Meanwhile, the larger phone on the right – or Xperia S70 – seems to be around the same size as the Xperia Z3, but again with a big bottom.

We’ll be bringing you a full hands-on review of the new Sony gear on September 2nd.
