Bugatti has released a teaser video of the Veyron’s successor, sending the internet into overdrive over just what the hypercar will entail.
The video shows a road marking speeding by before it all goes white and we are treated to a roar of an engine that will undoubtedly have more horsepower than we’ve had hot dinners.
“A new chapter begins, join us,” the video’s narrator tells us, before adding: “In the endless hunt for speed the horizon beckons.” Given the last Veyron was the world’s fastest production car we can safely assume its replacement is gunning for the same goal.
Just how powerful will it be? A report in Car Magazine claims 1,500bhp developed by a heavily revised version of the Veyron’s W16 monster. Torque is said to be 1,106lb/ft, the top speed a whopping 288mph and 0-62mph will take two seconds. Lightweight carbon fibre is another factor.
Bugatti is yet to confirm the name of the new car, which was sent back to the drawing board by VW chairman Ferdinand Piech and delayed until 2016, but Car Magazine reports it will be named after a racing driver, Louis Chiron.
VW will give the Chiron cylinder deactivation, electric actuated turbocharging and direct injection, all of which should help it achieve 14mpg and satisfy the forthcoming stricter emissions regulations. There are also talks of a hybrid system that will compliment the 8.0-litre petrol like in the McLaren P1.
Bugatti recently built its 450th Veyron, marking the end of the production run and with it one of man’s finest automotive achievements. Were it not for the fact the Chiron sounds like it will eclipse it in every way, we might well shed a tear.
In related news, Bugatti will unveil its Vision Gran Turismo concept car at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The car will offer a glimpse of Bugatti design “over the next few years”, according design team head Achim Anscheidt.
Anscheidt added: ‘With the Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo virtual concept, Bugatti will be presenting the new form and design language developed by the brand to celebrate the next chapter in its history following the end of the Veyron era.
“Bugatti’s design DNA has reached a new stage in its evolution… our concept car for Vision Gran Turismo will be exaggerated and extremely performance-oriented.”
While cars like the Ferrari LaFerrari, P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder are lacking in power in comparison with the reported specs, Bugatti will have to worry about the Koenigsegg One:1, which recently managed to go from 0-186mph (300kmh) in 11.92 seconds.
