Amazon adds HDR to 4K Mozart in the Jungle and Red Oaks on Samsung smart TVs

Amazon has announced that its making its 4K Ultra HD content available in HDR (High Dynamic Range) on TVs that can support it.

The first season of drama Mozart in the Jungle plus the pilot of upcoming comedy series Red Oaks will be available to watch in HDR, promising higher degrees of contrast and brighter colours along with the extra detail you’d get with a typical 4K stream.

Jay Marine, vice president for Amazon Instant Video in the EU said: “HDR provides a truly stunning visual experience and we’re excited that our original series, Mozart in the Jungle and the pilot episode of Red Oaks are the first titles to be made available in the unmatched picture quality.

So far, only folks with Samsung smart TVs from the SUHD range of sets will be able to stream Mozart and the Red Oaks pilot in 4K. You’ll also need to have a broadband service providing enough bandwidth, around 20-25Mbps at all times, to be able to enjoy Amazon’s 4K content at its best.

We’ve asked Amazon spokespeople for a comprehensive list of TV models and when other brands will be able to join the HDR party and we’re waiting to hear back.

Amazon recently announced launch dates for a range of upcoming titles including The Man In the High Castle and the second season of Transparent. The next season of Mozart in the Jungle hits Amazon Prime Instant Video next January. It’s currently unclear if that will be available in HDR as well, but we’d be surprised if this, as well as Clarkson, Hammond and May’s new show, isn’t.

Prime Instant Video costs either £5.99/month or £79/year if you sign up for the full Amazon Prime package. There’s no extra cost require for watching content in 4K or HDR.
