BBC Sport app comes to Samsung Smart TVs

Samsung has announced that the BBC Sport App is now available on its Smart TVs.

Though not in time to show Smart TV owners Nadal’s ignominious exit from the tournament live, Samsung Smart TV owners will be able to watch repeats on-demand as well as live streams of future matches, as well a Formula 1 footage.

The BBC Sport App, accessible through the Smart Hub section of Samsung’s connected tellies, is available to download now on the 2012 range. Though we understand that the 2011 range will get the app in time for the London 2012 Olympics, there’s no solid release date as of yet.

“Whether you’re a tennis enthusiast or keen to see who steps up on the podium in Formula 1, the BBC Sport App will keep Smart TV viewers up to date with the latest action around the world,’’ he added.

The BBC Sport App boasts a similar look and layour to the BBC Sport website (above). The app will offer a range of alternative coverage options for Wimbledon including additional matches/games plus a choice of audio commentary options, stats and rolling highlights. During next week’s British Grand Prix, full coverage of practices and qualifiers along with a driver tracker, showing where each car is on the circuit, will be available.

This news comes as BBC launches a beta version of its BBC Sports Facebook app, which brings live streams to sporting events to the social network, plus a panel that shows what sporting events your mates are watching.

BBC Sport is already to download on PanasonicSony Smart TVs and Virgin Media’s TiVo box. This perhaps acts as a good case in point for the Smart TV Alliance – a cross-platform app ecosystem for Smart TVs proposed by LG and Philips. Luckily for sports fans, the BBC has been pretty good about pushing out its Sports App to various Smart TVs ahead of the Olympics…
