BBC Three original dramas coming to iPlayer over the next two years

BBC Three original dramas coming to iPlayer over the next two yearsThe BBC will be bringing six original BBC Three dramas exclusively on the iPlayer.

The six short films will showcase up-and-coming directing and writing talent and is part of the BBC’s plans to curate a growing platform of online-only content. These plans started in 2012 and featured the famous ‘Feed My Funny’ comedy pilots and Doctor Who spin-off mini-series Pond Life

As of yet, there’s no mention of what the films produced will be about or who will be directing. Fans of popular horror-drama-comedy hybrid Being Human will note that it initially began life as a BBC Three pilot. While these films will be self-contained shorts, popular productions could act as springboards for greater things.

In some ways what the BBC is doing is similar to what Netflix and Lovefilm have started with the likes of House of Cards and Sara Solves It

Victoria Jaye, BBC Head of IPTV & TV Online Content, says: “This ambitious new strand builds on BBC iPlayer as a creative platform to bring original British drama to audiences online, and explores storytelling outside of scheduled TV slot or duration.  Audiences will be able to discover, share and enjoy these dramas whenever and wherever they choose.”

Hilary Salmon, Executive Producer, BBC Drama, adds: “This is a precious opportunity for BBC Drama Production to produce original content for the BBC iPlayer and the BBC Three audience and to build relationships with writing and directing talent that is on the way up.”

There’s no ETA for when the first of the films will arrive; all we know right now is that they’ll be broadcast online over two years.
