Blinkbox finds a new home on Tesco’s £60 Hudl tablet

Streaming movies and music service Blinkbox gets top billing on Tesco’s Hudl Android tablet – costing as little as £60 with Clubcard points.

Blinkbox, owned by Tesco, will launch a books service later this year as Tesco targets the three-quarters of British homes which don’t own a tablet.

On sale from September 30, Hudl will cost £119 in cash, or £60 if purchased with Tesco Clubcard points using Clubcard Boost.

Hudl has a 7-inch HD Ready scratch-resistant screen with 1440×900-pixel resolution, a 1.5GHz quad core processor, nine-hour battery life and dual-band WiFi with twin antennas.

Running Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) it also has a micro-HDMI output for connecting to a TV, 16GB of memory with an SD card slot for adding an extra 32GB, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS.

It launches with a family-friendly introduction screen which allows parents to set up filters, passwords and Google’s SafeSearch before handing the Hudl over to their children.

Pay-as-you-go film library Blinkbox was purchased by Tesco in 2011, and the brand was expanded in 2012 with the purchase of music streaming service WE7, which became Blinkbox Music this summer.

Blinkbox Books will launch later this year based on ebook retailer Mobcast, and Hudl also hosts an app for Tesco’s Clubcard TV, a free film and TV library for Clubcard holders.

A Tesco launcher button on the tablet’s desktop allows quick access to the Blinkbox and Clubcard TV services, as well as Tesco’s online shopping and banking.
