BT confirms Netflix is coming to its YouView TV boxes

BT has confirmed that Netflix is coming to its YouView-based TV offering. 

Customers will be able to add the cost of the popular streaming service – £5.99/month – on to their broadband and TV bill. 

BT’s TV packages start at £5/month on top of your BT broadband package. It’s yet known if BT Infinity, BT’s FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet)-based service is required to get Netflix. In order to get BT Sport in HD or extra channels like Comedy Central or Fox you’ll need to take BT Infinity. 

BT said: “We added 38,000 TV customers in the quarter. We continue to focus on strengthening our TV proposition and are excited to announce we have entered into a partnership with Netflix that will allow our customers to sign up for Netflix alongside our other products and services, with the added convenience of paying on one bill directly through BT.” 

The information was revealed in the ISP’s financial results, which also revealed BT’s quarter has been a pretty strong one thanks to customers flocking to sign up for its fibre broadband service. 

BT Sport also helped boost revenues for the company. It revealed Premier League audiences are up around 45 per cent on average and much of this is down to the company offering more games on its TV platform this season.

Gavin Patterson, chief executive of BT said: “Further improving customer service remains a priority and Openreach is recruiting an additional 500 engineers to help us better serve our customers. We have also launched a range of new cloud-based products and services aimed at the business market.” 

The popular streaming service that’s home to popular homegrown hits House of Cards and Orange Is The New Black plus Breaking Bad and the US remake of The Killing can be accessed through Virgin Media TiVo and its rumoured that TalkTalk TV as well as other YouView customers will soon be able to access Netflix too. 

This would leave Sky as the only pay TV provider yet to get on board with Netflix. Sky’s on demand library means that subscribers can access the latest Hollywood blockbusters with Sky Movies and exclusive dramas on Sky Atlantic including The Knick, The Leftovers, Veep and Mad Men, albeit at a higher price than a Netflix subscription. 

BT TV customers can currently sign up for Sky Movies for £16/month. Customers with regualr ADSL broadband can only access Sky Movies content on an on-demand basis – Infinity customers can get all 11 Sky Movies channels plus access to the on-demand library.
