Deadpool vs Quicksilver: BT and Sky sign up superheroes for broadband beat down

Our inner nerd was pleased to note that both BT and Sky have signed up Ryan Reynolds and Evan Peters – perhaps better known as Deadpool and Quicksilver – for some recent TV ad action.

The Reynolds ad follows in the more recent tradition of BT’s TV spots, where big name celebs wander on to the set, only for something to go wrong in a knowing fourth-wall breaking way which, if you’re in any way familiar with Deadpool’s character, is kind of perfect.

Sky’s Quicksilver advert however trades more on the character’s speed vis-a-vis the buffering-beating properties of superfast Sky Fibre. It may also be a rather tenuous nod to Sky Q, and the 4K-ready Silver set-top box

We should point out that while both BT Infinity 2 and Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro give you top download speeds of up to 76Mbps, BT’s entry-level FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) service now gives you up to 52Mbps, whereas the cheaper Sky Fibre products cap out at 38Mbps. Which makes no sense, as everybody knows that Quicksilver’s faster than Deadpool IRL.

But more to the point, who would win in a straight up scrap? In a fight, we’d have to agree with the consensus here that Deadpool would surely lose – unless some of that trademark postmodern japery was employed and Wade simply stepped out of the comic book panel to avoid a pulverizing Pietro punch.

But if we’re going to talk about a character’s ability to quickly move through time and space as being a fitting analogy for the speedy services an ISP provides, we’ll just gently remind BT and Sky of that time when Virgin Media, which lets customers sign up for up to 200Mbps, signed up an ex-Time Lord to advertise their services…
