EE has taken the wraps off of three new 4G MiFis; aimed at a variety of different customers.
The rugged Osprey is aimed at students and comes in either a black and yellow or blue and white colour scheme. The distinctly iPhone 4-styled Kite is a more discreet device aimed more at working professionals and business-types.
Finally the Buzzard, the most intriguing of the new products, is touted as a 4G MiFi designed for in-car use.
The Buzzard comes with a USB lead that plugs into the cigarette lighter and a container design to fit into a cup holder, allowing you to turn your car into a mobile 4G hotspot, in a similar manner to how Green Tomato’s cabs work.
Both the youth-friendly Osprey and the Buzzard cost £49.99 while the slender Kite costs £69.99. You can sign up for rolling monthly 4G plans for as little as £10/month, which gives you 10GB or £15/month for 15GB.
Alternatively, you can pick up any of the above devices for free if you sign up for a 24 month 4G contract.
New 4G mobile broadband plans are being announced by EE today, which see you getting 1GB of data for £10/month, 3GB of data for £15/month.
In order to get the most out of EE’s 4G network, which provides top download speeds of 300Mbps, you’ll need to shell out for the more expensive EE Extra plans.
These cost £20/month, £30/month and £50/month for 15GB, 25GB and 50GB on 24 months respectively.
EE hasn’t mentioned the types of 4G antennas used in the Osprey, Kite and Buzzard, so right now it’s impossible to say if you’d be better off buying one of these or getting hold of the QR Code-tastic Huawei E5786.
The E5786 has a Cat 6 LTE antenna, which lets you tap top speeds of 300Mbps, the fastest speeds you can get on EE’s network right now. Older Cat 4 devices like the E5776 provide access to top speeds of 150Mbps.
Note that the top speeds you can get from EE also depend on where you are in the UK. An agreement with Tech City means that East London will always get the fastest 4G speeds from EE first before they start hitting other parts of the country.
The Osprey and Buzzard 4G MiFi’s are due to go on sale on May 28, with the Kite hitting shelves in July.
