EE to begin 80Mbps mobile broadband speed doubling within weeks

EE has announced plans to begin doubling mobile broadband speeds to 80Mbps ‘within weeks’. 

This will see top download speeds climb to 80Mbps across the 4G network, where customers currently enjoy 25-30Mbps on average. The theoretical top speed possible right now is 40Mbps. 

As per the announcement in April, the first ten cities to benefit from speed doubling are Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Sheffield.

Gatwick for example has just benefited from an injection of 4G, meaning irate holidaymakers will now be able to tweet complaints about their airline in a more speedy fashion.

Olaf Swantee, CEO of EE says: “With commuters spending an average of 75 minutes travelling every day, EE will roll out 4G across the busiest airports, commuter routes and shopping centres across the UK, powering the areas that matter most to Britain.”

“By the end of June, we will have rolled out 4G across 55 per cent of the population, and will continue to switch on new towns and cities.”

Throughout 2013, EE will continue to expand to key towns and cities across the country, including Aberdeen, Bath, Bournemouth, Brighton, Cambridge, Ipswich, Middlesbrough, Northampton, Norwich, Poole, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Swansea and York. By the end of 2014, EE plans to have 98 per cent of the population able to access its 4G services.
